The Courtyard

A thorough bred Bangalore girl, from schooling in Sophia High School to an architecture degree from R.V. College of engineering, I have spent my foremost years in the city I love most. After completing my master’s degree in Urban Design and Architecture from Columbia University, New York , I knew the laboratory for impact and change had to be Bangalore City.

Having worked in Several architecture and urban design firms, I developed a natural inclination to look for creative strategies and solutions for everyday city life. Having a strong interest in the arts and being fiercely political propelled me in connecting the dots for what we do today at Courtyard.

After much travel and work, the aim was to look at public spaces in Bangalore and activate them for art, culture and more. To move from survival mode to a thriving mode was key to a lot our initial ideas. I then took it upon my self to create this urban experiment of a public space, within our private premises in Shanti Nagar. It was born with the idea of being the first access point to easy culture in a growing and chaotic city.

From this was born The Courtyard- a community led space that aims to be the next in urban Culture and all things “Bangalore cool”. From community events, to open air movie screenings, to game day picnics, music concerts, we try to bring the quintessential “culture park” within our playground of ideas. We have since added

  • The Conservatory, a culinary glasshouse for chefs to chefs and epicures to explore food deeply
  • Wine in Progress, a dive bar for wine, committed to making wine approachable, easy and cultural, all while keeping it insanely fun
  • Middle Room, a listening bar dedicated to the old and lost intimate music and beer rooms of Bangalore. Analogue music, deep listening, accurate sound and eclectic music curation is at the heart of this new addition.

Bangalore still sits at the heart of all our endeavours and we hope to asses our growth by impact and relevance as opposed to scale or top lines. On a personal note, it has been an overwhelming and exhilarating ride to be able to bring these projects to life. Alongside bringing up two young girls at home and hoping they have something to be proud of that exists in our collective city.
